Distressed leather is full grain that has been loaded with waxes and oils so the colour shifts when the hide flexes. Bend it and the area goes lighter as the oils move away from the fold; rub it with a thumb and the colour comes back. This is called pull up, and it is why these bags look lived in from the first week.

Marks are the finish

On a smooth bag a scratch is damage. On a pull up hide a scratch is just a place where oils moved, and running a warm thumb over it usually removes it entirely. If it does not, a spot of conditioner will. This makes distressed leather the least stressful bag to own, which matters more than people expect: a bag you are afraid to put down is not doing its job.

How it looks over time

These do not so much darken as develop contrast. High points burnish and go glossy, creases stay lighter, and edges take on a polished line. After a couple of years a distressed bag looks like something inherited, which is the whole appeal.

Two things to know

First, the colour varies more between bags than any other finish we sell, because the wax loading is never perfectly even across a hide. Two bags of the same style will be recognisably the same colour and not identical. Second, heavy waxed hides can transfer slightly onto very pale fabric in the first few weeks. It settles, but if you wear a lot of cream and white, choose a different finish or expect to test it carefully first.

Care

Less than any other leather. Brush off dry dirt, warm out scratches with your hand, and re wax once a year at most. Do not use a conditioner heavy in silicone, which sits on top of the wax and dulls the pull up effect.
