Top grain is the same top layer of the hide as full grain, with one difference: the surface has been sanded to remove marks and then refinished. That makes it even, predictable and consistent from bag to bag, and it removes most of its ability to develop a patina.

What sanding actually takes away

The very outermost fibres of a hide are the densest. Sanding removes a fraction of a millimetre of them, which is enough to take the scars off and also enough to take a measurable amount of the tensile strength and most of the pore structure that absorbs oil. A top grain bag therefore stays close to the colour it arrived in, because there is less open surface for oils to go into.

When top grain is the right answer

If you want two bags to match. If you are buying for someone else and cannot ask whether they like visible marks. If you want a pale colour to stay pale, since full grain in cream or blush picks up hand marks quickly and top grain does not. And if a completely even surface is what you find beautiful, which is a legitimate preference and not a compromise.

Where top grain gets misused

The term covers a wide range. A lightly corrected top grain from a good tannery is a fine material. A heavily corrected hide with a thick pigment layer and a plate embossed grain is technically top grain too, and it behaves like plastic. The tell is thickness of finish: if the surface feels like a coating rather than like skin, it is the latter. We only use lightly corrected hides and we say on each product page which it is.

Our view

For most people buying one good bag, full grain is the better buy because it rewards use. Top grain earns its place in specific cases, and we would rather stock it properly for those than pretend it does not exist.
