Pebbled leather has a raised, rounded grain across the surface. On a full grain hide this comes from milling, where the leather is tumbled in a drum until the fibres relax and the surface draws up into that texture. It is the most practical finish we sell, for one reason: a scratch lands in the valleys between the pebbles instead of across a flat plane, so you do not see it.

Milled, not embossed

There are two ways to get a pebbled surface. Milling tumbles the hide so the grain rises naturally, which also makes the leather softer and gives an irregular texture that varies across the panel. Embossing presses a pattern into a flattened hide with a heated plate, which is faster, perfectly regular, and adds nothing to the leather. Ours are milled. The tell is regularity: if every pebble is the same size, it came off a plate.

Why it suits daily carry

If your bag goes on train seats, under desks and into car footwells, smooth leather will show every one of those encounters within a month. Pebbled will not. It is also slightly more water resistant, because the raised grain keeps droplets off the flat surface for longer. For a commuting tote or a backpack, this is the finish we recommend most often.

What you give up

Pebbled develops a subtler patina than smooth veg tan, because the texture breaks up the darkening. It also reads slightly more casual, so for a formal briefcase a smooth hide is usually the better look. And it is harder to get a crisp monogram into, so we press deeper on pebbled bags and recommend blind press over foil, which sits better in the texture.
