Description
Black in the medium Marlow is the version people buy when they have decided a tote should not be an event. Matte, unbranded, cut from an aniline dyed hide that reads dark brown in daylight, it is the bag that ends up on the same hook by the door every evening for years.
35cm across, 27cm high, and a base 12cm deep that does not taper. A 13 inch laptop, a slim notebook and a day’s things fit. A laptop and gym kit together do not, and that is what the large size is for. At 23cm of drop it clears most coats on the shoulder.
This is the bag for someone who wants one tote for work and weekends and does not carry a spare pair of shoes.
The leather
The hide is full grain and aniline dyed, so the colour runs through the leather instead of sitting on it as a pigment film. In daylight it reads as very dark brown rather than pure black, which is the giveaway that nothing was sprayed over it.
How it is made
The base is cut as its own reinforced panel, so a full load sits flat instead of on a fold. The seams that carry weight are hand stitched rather than machined, because a handle is what fails first on a tote. The lining is heavy cotton twill with a zip pocket and two open pockets sized for a phone and a pass. Expect 3 to 5 working days in the workshop before it is boxed and on its way.

Will a 13 inch laptop fit in this bag?
Yes. The opening is 35cm across and the base is 12cm deep, and a machine that size lies flat against the back panel. Anything larger than a 13 inch will sit above the top edge.
Does the bag hold its shape when it is empty?
Mostly. The base is a single reinforced panel so it stands up, and the sides soften a little over the first months, which is what stops a structured tote looking boxy.
Will this colour scratch or scuff easily?
It is aniline dyed full grain, so the colour runs through the leather instead of sitting on top as a film. A scratch does not leave a pale line, it buffs back with a thumb or a drop of conditioner.

How do I know this is genuinely full grain leather?
Look at the photographs of the surface. Full grain keeps the original grain, including old scars and insect marks, because nothing has been sanded off and sprayed over. If a leather panel is perfectly uniform it has been corrected. Ours are not.
