Description
Tan is the Marlow for people who want to watch a bag change. It leaves us pale, close to honey, with almost nothing on the surface to hide behind. Six months of sun, hands and coat sleeves take it toward chestnut, unevenly, starting at the handles and the front corners. If you want the bag you unbox to look the same in two years, buy the chocolate instead.
Measured properly: a 40cm opening over a 14cm base, standing 30cm tall. That takes a 16 inch laptop lying flat, a folder beside it and a 750ml bottle standing upright without leaning on anything. Expect 24cm of handle drop, enough that it clears a winter coat on the shoulder without riding up.
It suits someone whose bag has to hold a working day and then some, and who would rather not think about a closure.
The leather
Bark tanned rather than chrome tanned, which is why this is the one hide in the range that changes in front of you. It starts pale and unfinished, and sunlight, hand oils and ordinary wear pull it toward a deep chestnut over roughly two years.
How it is made
Handles are set through the body panel and riveted in solid brass at both ends, never glued to a tab. Hand stitching where it carries weight, machine stitching where it does not, which is an honest division of labour. Cotton twill throughout, with one zipped pocket and two open, and no glue anywhere in the assembly. Made when you order, which takes 3 to 5 working days, and a monogram adds roughly a day to that.

Will a 16 inch laptop fit in this bag?
Yes. The opening is 40cm across and the base is 14cm deep, and a machine that size lies flat against the back panel. Anything larger than a 16 inch will sit above the top edge.
Does the bag hold its shape when it is empty?
Mostly. The base is a single reinforced panel so it stands up, and the sides soften a little over the first months, which is what stops a structured tote looking boxy.
Will the tan leather darken?
Yes, and quickly at the handles. It is vegetable tanned, so sunlight and the oils from your hands take it from honey toward chestnut over about two years. The change is uneven and permanent. If you want it to stay as it arrives, choose chocolate.
How do I know this is genuinely full grain leather?
Look at the photographs of the surface. Full grain keeps the original grain, including old scars and insect marks, because nothing has been sanded off and sprayed over. If a leather panel is perfectly uniform it has been corrected. Ours are not.
Is the monogram really free?
Yes, on every bag, including this one. Three letters in gold foil, silver foil or a blind press with no colour. It adds about a day before dispatch and we email you a proof of the placement first.
