Description
Black is the one people order when the bag has to disappear into everything they already own. The Marlow in black is cut from a matte full grain hide that reads as ink in a photograph and as very dark brown in afternoon light, which is the giveaway that nothing has been sprayed over the top of it. It is our quietest bag and the one that comes back for repair least often.
It opens at 40cm and is 14cm deep where it matters, at the base rather than at the widest point. A 16 inch machine goes in flat against the back, with a folder and a bottle alongside it and room to spare. At 24cm of drop it clears a winter coat on the shoulder without riding up.
Buy it if your daily load is a laptop plus something else and you are in and out of the bag constantly.
The leather
The hide is full grain and aniline dyed, so the colour runs through the leather instead of sitting on it as a pigment film. In daylight it reads as very dark brown rather than pure black, which is the giveaway that nothing was sprayed over it.
How it is made
No edge paint anywhere on the bag, and no glued handle tabs, which are the two places a cheap tote gives way. Every cut edge is sanded and burnished in four passes rather than painted, so it cannot flake off in a strip. The lining is heavy cotton twill with a zip pocket and two open pockets sized for a phone and a pass. Built to order, out of the workshop in 3 to 5 working days, plus a day if you want initials on it.

Will a 16 inch laptop fit in this bag?
Yes. The opening is 40cm across and the base is 14cm deep, and a machine that size lies flat against the back panel. Anything larger than a 16 inch will sit above the top edge.
Does the bag hold its shape when it is empty?
Mostly. The base is a single reinforced panel so it stands up, and the sides soften a little over the first months, which is what stops a structured tote looking boxy.
Will this colour scratch or scuff easily?
It is aniline dyed full grain, so the colour runs through the leather instead of sitting on top as a film. A scratch does not leave a pale line, it buffs back with a thumb or a drop of conditioner.
Is the monogram really free?
Yes, on every bag, including this one. Three letters in gold foil, silver foil or a blind press with no colour. It adds about a day before dispatch and we email you a proof of the placement first.
Can I return it if I have my initials pressed on it?
No. A monogrammed bag cannot be resold, so it is final sale. Unmonogrammed bags can go back for 60 days in unused condition and we pay the return postage inside the US.
