Description
Cognac gives the Wren the warmth that a woven bag needs to avoid looking like a craft project. The amber tone sits differently on each strand depending on how it was cut from the hide, so the panel has a low shimmer that a flat leather bag cannot produce.
It opens at 36cm and is 13cm deep where it matters, at the base rather than at the widest point. Room for a 13 inch laptop, a book and a bottle, and the weave flexes around an odd shaped load in a way a rigid tote will not. At 23cm of drop it clears most coats on the shoulder.
Buy it if a plain leather tote feels too plain and a straw bag feels too casual.
The leather
Cognac is full grain finished with a light wax rather than a topcoat. Each strand is cut at a consistent 12mm from the same hide as our flat panel bags and woven over a leather backing, which is the step most woven totes skip. Expect it to move about half a shade darker in the first year, most obviously along the handles.
How it is made
No edge paint anywhere on the bag, and no glued handle tabs, which are the two places a cheap tote gives way. Every cut edge is sanded and burnished in four passes rather than painted, so it cannot flake off in a strip. The lining is heavy cotton twill with a zip pocket and two open pockets sized for a phone and a pass. Built to order, out of the workshop in 4 to 6 working days, plus a day if you want initials on it.

Will a 13 inch laptop fit in this bag?
Yes. The opening is 36cm across and the base is 13cm deep, and a machine that size lies flat against the back panel. Anything larger than a 13 inch will sit above the top edge.
Will the woven leather stretch or sag?
Not in the way an unbacked woven bag does. Every strand is woven over a full leather backing panel, so the weave cannot spread under load. It will soften, which is different from sagging.
Will the cognac colour change with use?
It deepens about half a shade in the first year, most visibly where your hand rests on the handles. It will not change dramatically the way our vegetable tanned tan does.
What is covered if something breaks?
Stitching and hardware are covered for as long as you own the bag. Send it back and we repair it. Wear on the leather itself, and anything caused by an accident, we repair at cost rather than free.
How long will it take to reach me?
