Description
Charcoal waxed canvas with black leather is the Ellis at its most urban: a hard wearing bag that looks right with a raincoat and a train ticket. The canvas darkens where the wax compresses along the fold lines, which is the whole point of waxed cotton.
It opens at 42cm and is 15cm deep where it matters, at the base rather than at the widest point. Laptop, kit bag and lunch at the same time. At 42cm this is the only bag in the range that takes all three without a fight. The 25cm drop means it is the easiest bag in the range to get onto a shoulder over anything.
Buy it if your commute is on foot and the weight of an all leather tote has put you off before.
The canvas and the leather
The body is 18oz waxed cotton in charcoal, dry finished rather than sticky, over black full grain leather at the handles, corners and base. It is water resistant rather than waterproof, and the leather base is what keeps the bottom of the bag out of standing water.
How it is made
No edge paint anywhere on the bag, and no glued handle tabs, which are the two places a cheap tote gives way. Every cut edge is sanded and burnished in four passes rather than painted, so it cannot flake off in a strip. A twill lining with three pockets, and it is stitched in, so a ruined lining is a repair rather than a write off. Built to order, out of the workshop in 3 to 5 working days, plus a day if you want initials on it.

Questions people ask about this bag
Will a 16 inch laptop fit in this bag?
Yes. The opening is 42cm across and the base is 15cm deep, and a machine that size lies flat against the back panel. Anything larger than a 16 inch will sit above the top edge.
How do I clean and re wax the canvas?
Brush off dry dirt, then wipe with a damp cloth and cold water only, never detergent and never a machine. Re wax with an ordinary wax bar once every year or two. We will also re wax it here free in the first two years if you cover the postage.
Will this colour scratch or scuff easily?
It is aniline dyed full grain, so the colour runs through the leather instead of sitting on top as a film. A scratch does not leave a pale line, it buffs back with a thumb or a drop of conditioner.
Can I return it if I have my initials pressed on it?
No. A monogrammed bag cannot be resold, so it is final sale. Unmonogrammed bags can go back for 60 days in unused condition and we pay the return postage inside the US.
What is covered if something breaks?
Stitching and hardware are covered for as long as you own the bag. Send it back and we repair it. Wear on the leather itself, and anything caused by an accident, we repair at cost rather than free.
