Waxed canvas is the right answer when weight matters more than formality. The large Ellis is 42cm across, the widest bag we make, and 0.95kg empty, which is lighter than our 35cm leather tote. The leather is still there, on the handles, the corner caps and the base panel, which is to say on every part that actually wears.

Charcoal canvas with black leather, olive with tan, sand with cognac, navy with chocolate, stone with tan. The leather half darkens well before the canvas does, so the contrast softens over the first year rather than sharpening. Large at 42cm and small at 30cm.

It is priced lower here than our leather totes, but the material itself is not a discount. Plain cotton canvas is. Waxing adds cost rather than removing it: the same tote pattern elsewhere runs about $20 more in waxed khaki than in plain canvas, and some makers price their waxed canvas line above their leather one. What you are paying less for on this page is leather area, not quality of construction. The stitching, the burnished edges and the solid brass are identical to the $225 bag.
