Satchel, messenger or briefcase?
The satchel started as a school bag: a flap over the opening, a handle on top and a strap for the shoulder. A messenger has the flap and the strap but usually no handle. A briefcase is carried by its handles first, and is often a zip-top case like our Richmond. Our Leyburn and Penrith have no top handle, so they appear with the men's leather messenger bags rather than here.

The Durham
The Durham is the satchel for people who carry a lot. It has two main compartments, so the laptop sits in its own padded section away from lunch and wet umbrellas. Under the flap are pen loops, a phone pocket and a zip pocket. The flap fastens with two leather straps and solid brass buckles, the top handle has a 4-inch drop, and the shoulder strap unclips when you want it to look like a briefcase. It comes in black, chocolate, cognac, oxblood and tan buffalo leather.
The Hebden
The Hebden is the everyday satchel: 15 inches wide, 3.5 deep and 2.6 lb empty, so it carries a 14-inch laptop without the bulk of a briefcase. Two leather straps with solid brass buckles hold the flap, a small front pocket with its own flap keeps keys and a card holder to hand, and the rolled top handle sits on brass rings. It comes in chocolate, tan, black and cognac full grain leather.
The Morpeth
The Morpeth is lighter and a little smaller. It has a structured full grain flap on a brass push-lock, a top grab handle and an adjustable strap with a 23-inch drop, which makes it a satchel you will mostly wear as a messenger. It comes in black, chocolate, cognac, olive and tan.
Why buffalo leather suits a satchel
A satchel lives on its flap and buckles, and thin leather wrinkles and sags there within a year. Buffalo hide is thicker than cow hide, so the Durham's flap keeps its shape and the buckle straps do not stretch. Its oiled pull-up finish lightens where it bends and darkens again with handling, and most scratches buff out with a thumb. See all our buffalo leather bags.
How to carry a satchel
Use the top handle in the office and in meetings, where a long strap looks casual. Wear the strap across the body on the commute, so the weight sits at your hip and both hands are free. On the Durham you can unclip the strap entirely and carry it as a briefcase.
What to check on any satchel
Look at the buckle straps: they should be stitched through the flap, not glued on. The top handle should be riveted or stitched through a reinforcing patch, because it carries the whole weight when the bag is lifted. Check that the flap is stiff enough to hold its shape when the bag is half empty. Make sure the laptop sleeve is padded and fits your machine with a little to spare. Our guide to the best leather briefcases covers the same checks for handle-first bags.
Gifts
A satchel with initials on the flap is a lasting gift for a new job or a promotion. See personalized briefcases and leather gifts for him.
Made to order and returns
Both satchels are cut and stitched by hand in our own workshop after you order and leave within 5 to 7 working days. Up to three initials can be pressed on the flap, free. Every bag has 30-day returns, lifetime cover on the stitching and five years on the hardware.
