Leather Satchels

A satchel is the structured, flat-fronted bag with a flap, carried by a top handle or on a long strap. The Rydal has twin brass buckles over magnetic catches, so it looks traditional but opens in one move, and a 13-inch laptop fits behind the main section.

Satchel, briefcase or saddle bag?

A satchel has a flat front, a full flap and straight sides, and you carry it by a top handle or a long strap. A briefcase is wider and stiffer. A saddle bag is smaller, with a curved flap. The Rydal is a true satchel. It's sized like a 13-inch school satchel, with twin buckles over hidden magnets so it opens in one movement.

Who the Rydal is for

It suits people who want one bag for work and evening: a tablet or slim laptop in the back section, a notebook and the daily kit in front, and a shape that stays smart when you set it on a desk. If you need a 15-inch laptop, a work tote is the better choice.

Sizes in this collection

At 12.5 inches wide and 9 inches tall, the Rydal matches the classic 13-inch satchel size. The handle drop is short at 4 inches for hand carry, and the long strap covers shoulder and crossbody lengths.

The leather

Satchels need a leather with body, firm enough to keep a flat front and sharp flap. We use a firmer full-grain hide for the Rydal than for our soft bags, so it keeps its outline after years on a desk and in a locker.

How it is made

The flap, gussets and back are cut as separate panels and joined with hand saddle stitching in our own workshop. Buckle straps are riveted and stitched, and the magnets sit inside leather pockets so they never touch your tablet screen.

Colours

Satchels look most traditional in tan and cognac, the colours of old schoolbags. Black and chocolate make the Rydal work for meetings, and olive and oxblood give it a heritage feel without being loud.

Initials, delivery and returns

Initials sit best on the satchel flap, under the buckles. Free to add, with dispatch in 3 to 5 working days and 30 days for returns.

Care

A structured satchel keeps its shape best when stored with its flap closed and something light inside. Wipe the flap, which takes most of the wear, and condition the buckle straps so they keep flexing easily.

Wearing a satchel three ways

By the top handle it reads as a smart work bag. On the shoulder with the long strap it's an easy commuter. Worn crossbody, it sits flat on the hip and is the most practical way to carry it on foot. The Rydal's long strap clips off completely, so on a desk it looks like a small briefcase with no loose strap. Pick the carry that suits the day and change it without tools.

What a structured satchel will and will not carry

A structured satchel has fixed sides, so what fits on day one is what fits for good. It won't stretch to take an extra jumper. The Rydal's back section takes a tablet or slim 13-inch laptop, and the front holds a notebook, phone, wallet and pens. It doesn't fit a 15-inch laptop, a lunch box and a bottle together. If that's your daily load, a work tote suits you better. The benefit of a fixed shape is that it always looks neat and protects what's inside.

How the satchel ages

A satchel's flap takes most of the handling, so it's where the patina shows first. In cognac and tan the flap darkens and the buckle straps soften within a few months, while the gussets stay lighter. That two-tone ageing is what gives old satchels their look. In black and chocolate the change is smaller and shows more as a slight sheen. The structure holds for years, because the panels are cut from a firmer hide than our soft bags.

Satchel colours for work

For offices with a formal dress code, black and chocolate Rydals look most at home and pair with dark tailoring. For creative or relaxed workplaces, tan and cognac bring the classic schoolbag look. Olive and oxblood stand out without looking out of place in a meeting. If the satchel will also be your weekend bag, cognac is the most flexible because it suits both suits and denim.
