Where the slouch comes from
Slouch comes from the leather, not from the pattern. Our Selby is cut from a milled, pebbled full-grain hide. Milling tumbles the leather in a drum until the fibres relax, which raises a natural pebble and makes the hide drape. We leave it unlined so nothing stiffens the walls, and the inside is the smooth flesh side of the hide.
Will it sag or stretch?
A slouchy bag should fold, not stretch out. The strap roots and the mouth are reinforced with a second layer of leather, so the parts that take the weight keep their shape while the body softens. Expect it to feel noticeably softer after a month of daily use. That is the leather breaking in, not wearing out.
Sizes in this collection
The Selby is 16.25 inches wide and 11 inches tall, but slouchy bags lose about an inch of height once filled and worn. The 10.75-inch drop allows for that, so it still sits at the hip rather than riding up.

The leather
Softness here comes from milling a full-grain hide, not from using a thin or split one. A milled full-grain hide keeps its strength while losing its stiffness, which is why the Selby can go unlined and still hold up.
How it is made
An unlined bag hides nothing, so every seam on the Selby is finished to be seen from inside as well as out. The stitching is done by hand, the raw edges are burnished on both faces, and the hidden snap is backed with a leather patch so it never pulls through.
Colours
Pebbled leather softens colour, so the Selby's shades read gentler than the same names on a smooth bag. Black looks charcoal-soft, cognac goes caramel, and oat is the lightest, most relaxed version of the shape.
Initials, delivery and returns
Initials on a slouchy hide are pressed into a small leather tab rather than the soft body, so they stay crisp. Made to order, out in 5 to 7 working days, and returnable for 30 days.
Care
An unlined bag shows spills from the inside, so keep pens capped and liquids sealed. Brush the pebble with a soft dry brush, and never dry it near a heater: milled leather shrinks if heated fast.
Who a slouchy bag suits
A slouchy bag suits someone who hates the feeling of a stiff box against their side. It folds around what you carry, so a half-empty Selby doesn't look empty, and a full one doesn't bulge. It's also the lightest shoulder bag we make, because there's no lining or stiffener. The trade-off is organisation. With soft sides, small things sink to the bottom. A small pouch for keys and cards fixes that, and many Selby owners use our Mabel clutch for it.
Slouchy vs hobo: how to choose
They look alike but carry differently. A hobo has a set crescent outline and usually a zip, so it keeps its curve when you put it down. A slouchy bag has no fixed outline: it falls flat when empty and takes the shape of what's inside. The Selby is lighter and softer than the Hollis because it's unlined. The Hollis is more secure and better organised. Choose the Selby if softness and weight matter most, and the Hollis if you want a zip and inner pockets.
Breaking in a slouchy leather bag
The Selby arrives soft and keeps softening for several weeks. It's at its slouchiest after about a month of daily wear. You can speed that up by carrying it every day rather than in turns with other bags. The pebble flattens a little where your arm rubs, which gives a slight sheen along the side that touches your body. That's normal and evens out over time. Don't try to soften it faster with oils or heat. A light neutral conditioner after the first month is all it needs.
