What suede is
Suede is the inner side of the hide, brushed until it has a short, velvety nap. It is not full-grain leather, and we will not pretend it is. Full-grain is the outer surface and is tougher; suede is softer, lighter and richer in colour, because the open fibres take the dye deeply. That is why the same oxblood looks deeper in suede than in smooth leather.
Why every edge is bound in leather
Suede on its own frays at cut edges and wears thin at corners and strap points. So on every suede bag we make, the edges are bound in smooth full-grain leather, the strap and tabs are full-grain, and the zip ends are capped in leather. The suede gives you the look and the feel, and the leather takes the wear.

Buxton is the everyday suede crossbody: a soft rounded rectangle with a zip top, room for a card wallet and sunglasses. Tenby in suede is the half-moon mini for evenings. Bude in suede is the phone bag, with smooth leather card slots on the back. Skipton in suede is the sling, with a hidden back pocket. Ely in suede is the belt bag.
Suede and the weather
Suede does not like heavy rain, and no honest maker will tell you otherwise. Light rain is fine if the bag has been sprayed with a suede protector: water beads off, and you brush the nap up once it is dry. In a downpour, put it inside your coat or carry a smooth leather bag. Darker colours such as chocolate, black, moss and oxblood hide marks far better than sand and taupe.
The colours
Black, chocolate, tobacco, taupe, moss, oxblood and sand, though not every style comes in every colour. Tobacco is a warm reddish brown; taupe a cool grey-brown that works like a neutral; moss a deep green-brown; sand the palest, for summer. Each is lined in natural cotton twill and trimmed in leather of the same shade.
How it is made
Each suede bag is cut to order in our own workshop. We choose suede with a short, even nap so it does not shed or bald. The panels are lined in cotton twill so they keep their shape, the edges are bound and hand stitched, the strap anchors are leather, stitched and riveted, and the zips and clips are solid brass.
What fits in each suede bag
The Buxton takes a phone, card wallet, keys, sunglasses in a case and a lipstick, with a slip pocket inside. The Skipton sling takes a phone, passport, wallet and an e-reader, with a hidden back pocket. The Tenby takes a large phone, cards and keys. The Bude takes a phone, with up to a 6.9-inch screen, and three cards on the back. The Ely takes a phone, cards, keys and a passport.
Initials, delivery and returns
Three initials pressed free on the smooth leather tab, because suede does not take a clean press. Every suede bag leaves the workshop in 3 to 5 working days, and can come back within 30 days, initials or not.
Care
Brush it with a soft suede brush to lift the nap, and spray it with a suede protector before the first wear and every few months after. Rub small marks out with a suede eraser block. If it gets wet, blot it, let it dry naturally away from heat, then brush it. Never use leather conditioner on suede. Condition the smooth leather trim only, and lightly. More in our care guide.
Does suede age well?
Yes, if you look after it. Suede does not build a shiny patina the way full-grain does; instead the nap softens and the colour deepens slightly where it is handled. Brushed every few weeks, a good suede bag looks soft and lived in rather than worn out. What ruins suede is grease and being stored damp, so keep hand cream away from it and never put it away wet. Our short-nap cow suede is also tougher than the lambskin suede used in many fashion bags, so it does not bald at the corners.
Suede or smooth leather?
Choose suede for texture, softness and colour, and for autumn and winter. Choose smooth full-grain if the bag will be out in all weathers or get thrown around, because it handles rain and wipes clean. Many people own one of each. For smooth leather in the same shapes, see our women's crossbody bags and mini crossbody bags.
