The RyeThere are really three sizes of small bag. A phone bag, like the Bude, is cut around a phone, with the cards on the outside. A mini, like the Tenby or the Rye, adds room for keys, a lip balm and sunglasses in a soft pouch. A small everyday bag, like the Ripley saddle bag or the Tilly, takes a card wallet and sunglasses in a case as well. Before you choose, measure your phone in its case and compare it with the inside of the bag, not the outside.

The Bude takes a phone with up to a 6.9-inch screen. The Tenby and Rye take a large phone lying flat. The Tilly is the deepest at 3.5 inches, so it also holds a small wallet. The Ely belt bag is here because it is mini-sized and wears crossbody too.
Bude if you want the smallest bag that still replaces your wallet: three card slots on the back, phone and keys inside. Tenby if you want a soft half-moon shape with a zip along the curve, for evenings, festivals and errands. Rye if you want texture: a woven flap on a small box shape, closed with a hidden magnet. Tilly if you want a top handle as well as the strap. Ripley if you want a curved saddle flap and a solid brass turn-lock. Ely if you want to wear it at the waist sometimes.
A clutch is held in the hand or under the arm; a mini crossbody hangs from a strap and leaves both hands free. For a wedding or dinner where you will be holding a glass, a mini crossbody is easier. Our mini straps are 0.75 inches wide, slimmer than a full-size crossbody strap, because a small bag looks wrong on a wide one. They adjust up to a 23.5-inch drop, which sits the bag at the hip on most people, and shorten far enough to wear the bag on the shoulder. They clip on with solid brass swivel clips, so they come off when you want to carry the bag by hand or tuck it inside a tote.
The smooth minis are full-grain leather, the strongest grade, with the natural surface kept on. On a small bag the leather is also the decoration, so we choose hides with an even, close grain. The Rye is woven from full-grain strips over a solid leather back. The Tenby and Bude also come in soft cow suede, edged in smooth leather so the corners do not wear.
A mini bag is fiddly to make well, since every seam is short and every corner shows. Each one is cut to order and hand stitched in our own workshop. The base is its own panel so the bag stands up on a table, the strap tabs are stitched and riveted, and the zips and clips are solid brass.
Smooth minis come in black, cognac, chocolate, tan, oxblood, olive and oat. Small bags are where people take a chance on colour, so oxblood, olive and oat sell better here than on bigger bags. Suede minis come in black, chocolate, tobacco, taupe, moss, oxblood and sand.
Three initials pressed free, sized for a small bag. Smooth and suede minis leave the workshop in 3 to 5 working days, the woven Rye in 4 to 6. Returns run 30 days on every bag.
Wipe smooth leather with a dry cloth and condition it twice a year. Brush the Rye's weave with a soft brush. Brush suede, protect it with a spray, and keep it out of heavy rain. See our care guide for more.
Many people carry a mini inside a tote: phone, cards and keys in the mini, and everything else in the big bag. At lunch or in the evening, the mini comes out on its own. The Bude and Tenby are slim enough for that and ride inside any of our leather tote bags.
