Three browns, three ways of ageing
Cognac is a warm amber brown and changes the most, darkening around the handles within months. Chocolate is our darkest brown, near espresso, and stays close to how it arrives. Tan is pale saddle leather that turns honey with sun and handling. All three are waxed rather than coated, so they patina rather than fade.
Matching brown to your wardrobe
Cognac and tan sit well with denim, white, navy and olive. Chocolate is the brown for black and charcoal wardrobes, because it reads as a softer black. If you already wear brown shoes or a brown belt, you don't need to match them exactly. Leather looks best when it's within a shade or two.

The leather
Brown is where full-grain earns its keep. A coated brown bag stays one flat colour until it scuffs. A waxed full-grain brown changes slowly, picking up depth around the handles and edges, and that change is what makes an old brown bag look good.
How it is made
Browns are finished by hand with a wax that is worked into the surface, then buffed. Edges are burnished to a darker tone than the panels, which frames the bag and becomes richer as the wax ages.
Colours
Cognac for warmth, chocolate for depth, tan for the most change. If you can't decide, cognac is the middle path: bright enough to notice and dark enough to wear with almost anything.
Initials, delivery and returns
Gold initials look best on cognac and tan, and blind initials suit chocolate. Personalisation is free. Dispatch is 5 to 7 working days from order, and returns run for 30 days.
Care
Browns darken with conditioner, so test any product on the underside first. A wax-based conditioner revives the surface. If a mark doesn't buff out with a thumb, a little conditioner usually blends it.
Choosing between our three browns
Look at your coat and shoe colours first. If they are mostly black, grey or navy, chocolate is the safest brown and will look intentional. If they are camel, tan or white, cognac adds warmth without clashing. Tan is for people who want the bag to change visibly. In a year it'll look like a different bag, in a good way. Each product page shows the brown in daylight and indoor light, because brown shifts more under different lighting than any other colour.
Brown leather and patina: what to expect
Patina is the gradual darkening and polish leather gets from light, handling and the oils in your skin. On our waxed browns it shows first on handles, flap edges and the side that touches your body. Tan shows it within weeks. Cognac takes a couple of months, and chocolate mostly gains a soft sheen. Patina doesn't mean the leather is wearing out, and it can't be undone, so pick tan only if you like the idea of a bag that changes.
Pairing brown bags with shoes and belts
You don't need to match brown exactly. The rule that works is to stay within the same family of warm or cool tones. Cognac and tan are warm browns that suit tan, camel and cognac shoes. Chocolate is a cool, dark brown that suits black, grey and burgundy footwear. Wearing a bag one shade lighter or darker than your shoes looks deliberate, while an almost-match looks like a near miss. If you're unsure, choose a brown a clear step away from your shoes.
Which brown for which style
Some shapes suit some browns better. Tan looks best on the Ripley and Rydal, where it recalls riding tack and old satchels. Cognac makes the most of the soft folds of the Hollis and Selby. Chocolate keeps structured bags like the Ashby looking smart for work. On small bags like the Tilly and Mabel any brown works, so pick the one that matches the shoes you wear most.
