What suede is
Suede is the inner side of the hide, brushed until it has a soft, velvety nap. It is real leather, lighter and warmer to the touch than a smooth hide, and it drapes rather than holding a crisp edge. It is also less happy in heavy rain, and we say that plainly. Every suede bag we make has its strap, edges and zip ends in smooth full grain, so the parts that take the most wear are the strongest ones.
The shapes
The suede crossbody bags are the core: the Bude phone bag, the Tenby mini crescent and the Buxton everyday crossbody. The suede Skipton is a slim sling worn across the chest or back, and the suede Ely is a belt bag that also works as a mini sling. Each keeps the same measurements as the smooth leather bag it is based on.
| Style | Shape | Price |
| Bude, suede | Phone crossbody | $120 |
| Ely, suede | Belt bag and mini sling | $125 |
| Tenby, suede | Mini crescent crossbody | $135 |
| Buxton | Everyday crossbody | $155 |
| Skipton, suede | Slim sling | $155 |
Colors
Suede has its own palette: black, chocolate, tobacco, taupe, moss, oxblood and sand, though not every shape comes in every color. Chocolate, black and moss hide marks best. Sand and taupe are the lightest and show the most, which some people love because the bag visibly softens into its owner's.
Suede or smooth leather?
Choose suede if you want a softer, more relaxed bag with a matte finish that reads warmer in autumn and winter. Choose full grain leather if you want a bag that copes with any weather and develops a polished patina. Many people own both: the same Ely, Bude or Skipton, once in smooth leather and once in suede.
How to look after a suede bag
- Spray it with a suede protector before the first wear, and again every few months.
- Brush it with a soft suede brush to lift the nap and remove dust.
- Rub small marks out with a suede eraser block, then brush again.
- If it gets wet, blot it, let it dry naturally away from heat, then brush.
- Never use leather conditioner or cream on the suede; it flattens and darkens the nap. The smooth trim can take a little conditioner.

Initials and delivery
Suede does not take a clean press, so your initials are pressed free on the smooth full grain tab. Suede bags leave the workshop in 3 to 5 working days, plus one with a monogram. Stitching is covered for life, hardware for five years, and every bag can come back within 30 days.
Is suede practical for every day?
More than its reputation suggests. A sprayed suede bag copes with a light shower, dust brushes straight off, and the nap hides small scuffs that would show on a polished leather. Where suede struggles is oil and standing water, so keep it away from greasy hands and heavy rain, and choose a darker color if the bag will go everywhere with you. The suede Ely, Bude and Tenby are small enough that most people carry them close to the body, where they stay clean longest.
What to check on any suede bag before you buy
Run your hand across the nap: good suede feels even and dense, while thin suede feels papery and shows the backing at the seams. Look at the strap and the edges, which take the most wear; on a well made suede bag they are smooth leather. Look at the zip ends and the strap anchors, which should be reinforced with leather rather than left as bare suede. And check the hardware: solid brass on suede looks warmer and lasts longer than plated metal.
