Travel bags get rained on, pushed under seats and thrown on floors. Full-grain handles that better than any coated leather. Rain spots dry out, and scuffs blend back into the surface.
Travel bags need closures that stay shut. Zips are set into reinforced mouths, flaps have solid brass locks, and crossbody straps are anchored with doubled leather, all stitched by hand in our own workshop.
Dark colours hide travel wear best, so black and chocolate are the safest choices for long trips. Cognac and tan show where the bag has been.

A crossbody strap keeps the bag against your body, where it's harder to open unnoticed. An inner zip pocket for your passport and cards adds a second barrier. Slash-proof panels and locking zips mostly add weight. For most city trips, a well-made crossbody worn in front is enough.
Airlines let you take a personal item on board as well as a cabin bag, so a travel handbag should fit under a seat. That usually means under about 16 inches wide. All three travel styles we recommend are within that. Inside, you need room for a passport, phone, wallet, charger, small water bottle and a layer for the plane. The Hollis takes all of that. Before you leave, condition the bag lightly so the leather is less thirsty in dry climates. Pack a soft cloth to wipe off dust and sunscreen, which can mark leather if left on for long.
