The Rydal — Black Leather Satchel

The Rydal is a structured flap satchel with twin buckle straps over hidden magnetic catches, a top handle and a removable shoulder strap. It looks like a schoolbag that grew up.

Black is the colour that goes to every room without asking. This one is a matte, aniline-dyed hide, so it reads as deep ink rather than plastic shine, and a scuff buffs back with a thumb instead of showing a pale line.

It is 12.5″ (32 cm) wide, 9″ (23 cm) tall and 3.25″ (8 cm) deep. The top handle has a 4″ (10 cm) drop and the long strap adjusts for shoulder or crossbody. A 13-inch laptop or tablet slides into the back section.

The back section takes a tablet or slim laptop, and the front section has two open pockets and a pen slot, so papers and small things stay apart.

The leather

We use full-grain cowhide from our own regular supply and keep the natural surface. Nothing is sprayed over it to hide marks, so it softens and darkens with use instead of cracking.

How it is made

Made to order in our own workshop. The strap roots, the part that fails first on cheap bags, are double layered and hand stitched, and all fittings are solid brass.

Care

Let it dry slowly if it gets caught in rain, stuff it lightly with paper when stored, and condition it twice a year.
