A laptop messenger bag is judged on three things: whether the laptop fits with room to spare, whether it is protected when the bag is put down hard, and whether the strap is still comfortable at the end of the day. Laptops are sold by screen size, but bags are measured by the body. As a guide, a 13-inch laptop is about 12 inches wide, a 14-inch about 12.5 inches, a 15-inch 13.5 to 14 inches and a 16-inch 14 to 14.5 inches. Check your own model's width and depth, then allow at least an inch of spare width. That is why a 14-inch laptop goes in the 15-inch Hebden or Ambleside, a 15-inch laptop in a 15.5-inch bag, and a 16-inch laptop needs the 16.5-inch Durham. If your laptop lives in a thick case, measure it in the case.
Every bag here has a padded laptop sleeve that is a section of its own, so keys and chargers cannot scratch the lid, and the padding takes the knock when the bag is put down hard. Wear the bag with the sleeve side against your body, which keeps the heaviest thing close to you.
The Morpeth, Leyburn and Penrith have one main section behind the sleeve, with open pockets and a zip pocket under the flap for a phone, pens and keys. That is plenty for a laptop, charger, notebook and lunch. The Durham has two full main compartments, so a laptop and files can sit apart from a gym kit or a wet umbrella.
Add 3 to 4.5 lb for the laptop and about a pound for the charger to the empty weights above, and you are carrying 6 to 9 lb on one strap. If that is your daily load, choose the lighter Penrith, wear the bag across the body rather than on one shoulder, and keep the heaviest things in the sleeve nearest your back. Our messengers open from the top under a flap, so the laptop lifts straight out of its sleeve in one move. None of them is a lay-flat checkpoint design, so plan on taking the laptop out at screening.
Leather is more formal and builds a patina, and buffalo leather is the toughest, hiding scrapes from desks and car seats. Waxed canvas is lighter and better in rain, which matters when a laptop is inside. Every canvas bag still has a full grain leather strap, trim and base. More in can leather get wet.

Leather resists a shower but is not waterproof, so do not leave the bag in a downpour. The waxed canvas Penrith is the most water-resistant, and the padded sleeve adds another layer.
