Packing a weekender
| Trip | What fits |
| 1 night | Change of clothes, a sweater, a wash bag and room to spare for a laptop or a bottle of wine |
| 2 nights | Two shirts, a sweater, spare trousers, underwear and socks, a wash bag and a pair of shoes |
| 3 nights | As above, rolled not folded, wearing your bulkiest shoes and jacket on the way |
Pack heavy things such as shoes and the wash bag along the base, then roll clothes on top. Put anything you need on the journey, like a charger, book or passport, in the inside zip pocket so you do not unzip the whole bag. On the Keswick, shoes go in the zipped end pocket.
Our weekenders
The Barnard is a classic full grain leather weekender. It has rolled handles with a 10-inch drop, a stitched leather base, a detachable shoulder strap, and inside a long zip pocket plus two open pockets. It measures 21 x 12 x 10 inches and weighs 4.4 lb empty. It comes in black, chocolate, cognac, olive and tan. The Keswick is the lighter one, at 3.1 lb. It has a waxed canvas body that sheds rain, full grain leather handles and base, and a zipped end pocket for shoes. It measures 20 x 12 x 10 inches and comes in five canvas and leather pairings. The Malton is a rounded barrel duffle in thick buffalo leather, 21 x 12 x 10 inches and 4.6 lb, with a two-way brass zip, an end zip pocket and brass feet, in black, chocolate and tan. The Ilkley is the overnight bag: 18 x 11 x 9 inches and 3.3 lb in crazy horse leather, with a front zip pocket and a leather sleeve on the back that slides over a suitcase handle, in black, chocolate, olive and tan.
Weekender bag or carry-on suitcase?
A suitcase protects shirts better and rolls, but it cannot be squashed into a car trunk, thrown over a shoulder up station stairs, or stowed in a train rack that is already half full. A soft weekender can. For trips of three nights or fewer, most people find a weekender easier. For a week, take a suitcase and use the weekender as the second bag.
Carry-on size
US airlines commonly allow a carry-on of about 22 x 14 x 9 inches. All four are narrower and lower than that, and the 9-inch-deep Ilkley is within it. At 10 inches deep when packed full, the others rely on being soft to fit, so on budget airlines that measure, leave the bag a little underfilled. Both go in most overhead lockers, and the Keswick also fits under most train seats.
Leather or canvas weekender
Full grain leather is the more striking bag and the longer-lived one, and it builds a patina from every trip. It is 1.3 lb heavier and wants a slow dry after a downpour. Waxed canvas is lighter, water-resistant and easy to clean, and it gets its own creased, darker look over time. Every part that wears on the Keswick is still full grain leather. Read full grain vs top grain leather to see what to look for in the leather.
As a gift
A weekender is a classic third anniversary gift, because the third is the leather anniversary. It is also a classic gift for a groom or a retirement. A blind press of his initials on the end is subtle. See 3rd anniversary gifts for him and 3rd anniversary gift ideas for him.
Made to order and returns
Each weekender is cut and stitched by hand in our own workshop after you order and leaves within 5 to 7 working days. Up to three initials are pressed free, in gold, silver or a blind press. Any bag can come back within 30 days, and the stitching is covered for life.
