Description
Chestnut has a red cast that the other browns do not, and the grain shows through it more openly. In shade it looks like a deep tan; under a warm bulb it goes almost auburn. It is the most characterful Marlow in the range and the one that looks the least like something bought in a department store.
The opening runs 40cm, the base is 14cm deep and the body stands 30cm high. That takes a 16 inch laptop lying flat, a folder beside it and a 750ml bottle standing upright without leaning on anything. The handles drop 24cm, so the bag clears a winter coat on the shoulder without riding up.
It suits someone whose bag has to hold a working day and then some, and who would rather not think about a closure.
The leather
The red in chestnut is in the dye itself, not a tint sprayed over the top. The grain shows through it clearly, and it is the colour that varies most between hides. We do not correct for that.
How it is made
Brass hardware throughout, unplated, because plating wears through to grey exactly where your hand goes. Load bearing seams are saddle stitched by hand, two needles through one hole, so a cut thread stays put instead of running. Heavy cotton twill inside, one zip pocket and two open ones, stitched in rather than glued so it can be replaced. Cut, stitched and finished to order in 3 to 5 working days.

Will a 16 inch laptop fit in this bag?
Yes. The opening is 40cm across and the base is 14cm deep, and a machine that size lies flat against the back panel. Anything larger than a 16 inch will sit above the top edge.
Does the bag hold its shape when it is empty?
Mostly. The base is a single reinforced panel so it stands up, and the sides soften a little over the first months, which is what stops a structured tote looking boxy.
Will the chestnut colour change with use?
It deepens about half a shade in the first year, most visibly where your hand rests on the handles. It will not change dramatically the way our vegetable tanned tan does.
Is the monogram really free?
Yes, on every bag, including this one. Three letters in gold foil, silver foil or a blind press with no colour. It adds about a day before dispatch and we email you a proof of the placement first.
Can I return it if I have my initials pressed on it?
No. A monogrammed bag cannot be resold, so it is final sale. Unmonogrammed bags can go back for 60 days in unused condition and we pay the return postage inside the US.
