Description
Chocolate is the safest brown we make. It is dark enough to take a scuff without announcing it, warm enough that it never reads as black, and even across the whole hide, so the bag looks deliberate rather than rustic. This is the Marlow we recommend to anyone buying their first expensive bag and worrying about marking it.
You get 40cm of opening and, more usefully, 14cm of depth at the bottom rather than at the belly. A 16 inch machine goes in flat against the back, with a folder and a bottle alongside it and room to spare. Handle drop is 24cm, which clears a winter coat on the shoulder without riding up.
Buy it if your daily load is a laptop plus something else and you are in and out of the bag constantly.
The leather
Chocolate is a through dyed full grain hide with a very even take up. Scuffs and water marks both disappear into it, which makes it the most forgiving colour we make.
How it is made
Every cut edge is sanded and burnished in four passes rather than painted, so it cannot flake off in a strip. No edge paint anywhere on the bag, and no glued handle tabs, which are the two places a cheap tote gives way. Lined in heavy cotton twill with a zip pocket on the back wall and two open pockets facing it. Nothing is pre made, so allow 3 to 5 working days before it ships.

Will a 16 inch laptop fit in this bag?
Yes. The opening is 40cm across and the base is 14cm deep, and a machine that size lies flat against the back panel. Anything larger than a 16 inch will sit above the top edge.
Does the bag hold its shape when it is empty?
Mostly. The base is a single reinforced panel so it stands up, and the sides soften a little over the first months, which is what stops a structured tote looking boxy.
Will this colour scratch or scuff easily?
It is aniline dyed full grain, so the colour runs through the leather instead of sitting on top as a film. A scratch does not leave a pale line, it buffs back with a thumb or a drop of conditioner.
What is covered if something breaks?
Stitching and hardware are covered for as long as you own the bag. Send it back and we repair it. Wear on the leather itself, and anything caused by an accident, we repair at cost rather than free.
