Description
Tan in the small Wren is the most photographed bag we make, and the one that changes fastest, because a small bag is carried in the hand. Every strand edge catches the light differently, so the panel has a depth a flat tan panel cannot manage.
You get 28cm of opening and, more usefully, 11cm of depth at the bottom rather than at the belly. Tablet sized rather than laptop sized: a purse, keys, glasses, a bottle and a notebook, and nothing that has to be carried flat. Handle drop is 21cm, which will sit on a shoulder over a shirt but fights a thick coat.
This suits a day out rather than a day at a desk, and it is the one that gets picked up on the way out of the door.
The leather
This is vegetable tanned leather, tanned with bark rather than chromium, and it is the only leather we sell that visibly ages. Each strand is cut at a consistent 12mm from the same hide as our flat panel bags and woven over a leather backing, which is the step most woven totes skip. The change is permanent and uneven, it starts at the handles, and it is the entire point of buying this colour.
How it is made
Every cut edge is sanded and burnished in four passes rather than painted, so it cannot flake off in a strip. No edge paint anywhere on the bag, and no glued handle tabs, which are the two places a cheap tote gives way. Lined in heavy cotton twill with a zip pocket on the back wall and two open pockets facing it. Nothing is pre made, so allow 4 to 6 working days before it ships.

Questions people ask about this bag
Can I carry a laptop in this bag?
No, and that is deliberate. At 28cm wide and 11cm deep it takes a tablet at most. If you need a laptop bag, look at the Lorne or the large Marlow instead.
Will the woven leather stretch or sag?
Not in the way an unbacked woven bag does. Every strand is woven over a full leather backing panel, so the weave cannot spread under load. It will soften, which is different from sagging.
Will the tan leather darken?
Yes, and quickly at the handles. It is vegetable tanned, so sunlight and the oils from your hands take it from honey toward chestnut over about two years. The change is uneven and permanent. If you want it to stay as it arrives, choose chocolate.
How do I know this is genuinely full grain leather?
Look at the photographs of the surface. Full grain keeps the original grain, including old scars and insect marks, because nothing has been sanded off and sprayed over. If a leather panel is perfectly uniform it has been corrected. Ours are not.
Is the monogram really free?
Yes, on every bag, including this one. Three letters in gold foil, silver foil or a blind press with no colour. It adds about a day before dispatch and we email you a proof of the placement first.
