The Tilly — Tan Mini Leather Bag

Our tan starts pale and warm, close to raw saddle leather, and is meant to be carried until it changes colour. Water spots fade back in as it ages.

The Tilly is a mini top-handle bag that also wears crossbody. Small enough for an evening, built like a full-size bag with a real base and a zip that opens wide.

It is 8.75″ (22 cm) wide, 6.25″ (16 cm) tall and 3.5″ (9 cm) deep. The top handle has a 4″ (10 cm) drop and the detachable crossbody strap adjusts. A large phone fits flat inside with cards and keys.

Inside there is a single zip pocket and a key clip, and the base is a separate panel so the bag stands up on a table.

The leather

The hide is full-grain, which means the top surface is left on, grain, small scars and all, instead of being sanded and printed. It is the strongest layer of the skin and the only one that ages well.

How it is made

Load-bearing seams are saddle stitched by hand, two needles through each hole, so a cut thread does not run. Edges are sanded and burnished rather than painted, and the hardware is solid brass, unplated.

Care

Wipe it with a dry cloth, keep it out of long direct sun, and give it a neutral leather conditioner a couple of times a year.
