The Hawes — Black Buffalo Leather Crossbody Purse

The Hawes is a flap crossbody purse in full grain buffalo leather, with a solid brass push-lock on the front and a long adjustable strap.

Black buffalo leather. The pull-up finish shows slightly lighter lines where the leather flexes, so even the black has depth.

At 10 inches wide it holds a phone, a full wallet, keys and a lipstick without bulging.

Under the flap there is a slip pocket and a zip pocket, and the body is gusseted so it opens wide.

The leather

This is full grain water buffalo leather with a pull-up finish: a thicker hide than cow, with a bold, deep natural grain, finished in oils and waxes that lighten where the leather flexes and darken back as you handle it. Scratches buff out with a thumb. No two panels have quite the same grain.

How it is made

Made to order in our own workshop. Every piece is cut by hand, the seams are stitched with waxed thread, the edges are sanded and burnished rather than painted, and the hardware is solid brass. Three initials are pressed free, in gold foil, silver foil or a blind press.

Care

Wipe it dry, rub light scuffs with your thumb to warm the oils back in, and condition it once a year. A shower is fine; a downpour wants a slow dry away from heat.
