The Kendal — Oxblood Leather Bucket Bag

The Kendal is a oval-based bucket bag with a leather drawstring threaded through brass eyelets, a short shoulder strap and a removable long strap for crossbody wear.

A deep burgundy-brown hide that reads almost black at night and wine-red in daylight. It is the colour people ask about.

It stands 9″ (23 cm) tall, 9.75″ (25 cm) across the opening and 4.75″ (12 cm) deep, with an 11″ (28 cm) shoulder drop and an adjustable crossbody strap. The flat oval base means a water bottle stands upright.

Inside there is a zip pocket and a magnetic tab under the drawstring, so the bag stays shut in a crowd even when the cord is loose.

The leather

We use full-grain cowhide from our own regular supply and keep the natural surface. Nothing is sprayed over it to hide marks, so it softens and darkens with use instead of cracking.

How it is made

Every bag is cut, stitched and finished by hand in our own workshop. Strap anchors are stitched and riveted, not glued, and the edges are burnished in several passes so there is no paint to flake.

Care

Let it dry slowly if it gets caught in rain, stuff it lightly with paper when stored, and condition it twice a year.
