The Alnwick — Olive Leather Boat Tote

The Alnwick is our structured, open-top boat tote in full-grain leather: a flat base, gently flared sides, two handles stitched and riveted to the body, and a pressed leather patch at the centre front for your initials.

Olive is a muted, dusty green that works like a neutral, with a little more character than brown.

It comes in three sizes. The small is 12″ (30 cm) wide, 9.5″ (24 cm) high and 5″ (13 cm) deep, with a 9″ (23 cm) handle drop, and takes up to an 11-inch tablet. The medium is 15″ (38 cm) wide, 12″ (30 cm) high and 6″ (15 cm) deep, with a 10″ (25 cm) handle drop, and takes up to a 13-inch laptop. The large is 18″ (46 cm) wide, 14″ (36 cm) high and 7″ (18 cm) deep, with a 10.5″ (27 cm) handle drop, and takes up to a 15-inch laptop. Pick the size in the menu above; the price changes with it.

Inside there is a zip pocket on the back wall and an open phone pocket, lined in cotton twill, so the small things never sink to the bottom.

The leather

The hide is full-grain, which means the top surface is left on, grain, small scars and all, instead of being sanded and printed. It is the strongest layer of the skin and the only one that ages well.

How it is made

Load-bearing seams are saddle stitched by hand, two needles through each hole, so a cut thread does not run. The handles are riveted as well as stitched, edges are burnished rather than painted, and the hardware is solid brass.

Care

Wipe it with a dry cloth, keep it out of long direct sun, and give it a neutral leather conditioner a couple of times a year.
