How to Style a Tote Bag: How to Wear It, What to Wear It With

How you carry a tote changes how it looks, and how comfortable it is. This guide covers the four ways to wear a tote bag, the handle drop each needs, how to size a tote to your frame, and outfit ideas for work, weekends, travel, evenings and every season.

There are four ways to wear a tote bag: in the hand, in the crook of the elbow, on the shoulder, and crossbody on a long strap. Which one you choose depends on the handle drop and the weight, and each changes the look: hand and elbow read as polished, shoulder as everyday, crossbody as practical. Then match the tote to the outfit in three ways: size to your frame, structure to the formality, and colour to your shoes or belt (or deliberately not).

This guide covers each carry, how to size a tote to your body, outfit ideas for work, weekends, travel, evenings and every season, colour pairings, and the mistakes that make a good tote look wrong.

Disclosure: We make leather tote bags, and we use ours as examples where they fit, with real dimensions and prices (as listed in October 2026). The styling advice applies to any tote.

The four ways to wear a tote bag

Carry Handle drop needed Look Comfortable for Watch for
In the hand Any; short (4–7 in) is neatest Polished, formal Light loads, short walks Tires the hand quickly
Crook of the elbow 6–9 in Elegant, “dressed” Light to medium loads Strains the forearm with weight
On the shoulder 9–11 in (11 in+ over a coat) Everyday, relaxed Medium to heavy loads Slips off narrow or sloping shoulders
Crossbody 20–24 in strap Practical, casual Busy days, travel Wide totes bump the hip

In the hand, on the shoulder, or in the crook of the arm: the handle drop decides which works.

1. In the hand

Hold the handles together, arm straight by your side. It’s the most formal way to carry a tote and the one that suits a structured leather tote with an office outfit or a tailored coat. Keep the load light: a full tote carried this way pulls your shoulder down and creases your sleeve.

2. In the crook of the elbow

Slide both handles over your forearm and bend the elbow. This is the classic “ladies who lunch” carry, and it makes even a casual tote look intentional. You need a drop of at least 6 inches; a bulky coat sleeve needs more. Don’t do it with a laptop in the bag for long.

3. On the shoulder

The everyday carry, and the most comfortable for a full tote. Your tote needs a handle drop of about 9 to 10 inches to sit under the arm over a shirt or jumper, and 11 inches or more over a winter coat. Both handles should sit on the shoulder together; if one keeps slipping, the handles are too short or too far apart for your shoulder width.

4. Crossbody

Only possible if the tote has a long strap (usually detachable). It’s the most practical carry for travel, cycling, markets or children, because both hands are free and the weight spreads across the body. A smaller tote carries best this way; anything over about 15 inches wide bumps against the hip as you walk.

Handle drop: the number that decides how a tote wears

The handle drop is the distance from the top of the handle (held up) to the top of the bag. It’s the most useful measurement on any tote listing.

Handle drop How it carries
Under 6 in Hand only
6–8 in Hand or elbow
9–10 in Shoulder over lighter layers
10.5–12 in Shoulder over a coat
20–24 in (strap) Crossbody

For example, our Lorne work tote has a 10.25 in drop in medium and 10.75 in in large, which goes on the shoulder over a coat; our small Juno has a 7.5 in drop, so it’s a hand or elbow bag.

How to size a tote to your frame

There are no strict rules, but proportion makes a tote look right.

  • Petite (under about 5’3″): a tote around 12–15 inches wide, ideally north-south (taller than wide) or with a slim gusset, so it doesn’t swamp your silhouette. Check that the shoulder drop doesn’t put the bottom of the bag at mid-thigh.
  • Average height: 14–17 inches wide covers most totes, including laptop sizes.
  • Tall (over about 5’9″): larger totes, 16–19 inches wide, and longer drops look balanced; small totes can look like toys.
  • Broad shoulders: a tote with handles set wider apart sits more securely.
  • Sloping shoulders: choose a longer drop and softer handles, or carry in the hand or on a crossbody strap.

A simple test: stand in front of a mirror with the tote on your shoulder. The base should sit somewhere between your waist and hip bone. Much lower and it looks dragged; much higher and it digs into your armpit.

For more on shapes, see our guide to the different kinds of tote bags.

Tote bag styling by body shape and height

If you are… Choose Avoid
Petite (under about 5’3″) Small or medium tote, about 12–14 in wide; handle drop 8–9 in Oversized totes that reach mid-thigh
Tall (5’9″ and over) Medium or large tote, 15–18 in wide; longer drops Tiny totes that look lost
Curvy Structured totes that sit at the waist Slouchy bags that sit at the widest point of the hip
Straight or slim Slouchier or rounded totes, east-west shapes Very boxy shapes that add angles
Broad shoulders Longer handle drops; carry lower Short drops that sit high under the arm

These aren’t rules, just proportions that most people find flattering. If you love a big tote and you’re petite, wear it in the hand or the crook of the arm rather than on the shoulder.

Tote bag outfits for every occasion

For work

Cognac leather tote with a white shirt, navy wide-leg trousers, white trainers and sunglasses
An easy weekday outfit built around a cognac tote.

The look: a structured leather tote in black, chocolate, navy or cognac, carried on the shoulder or in the hand.

  • Tailoring: a black or navy tote with a suit or a blazer and trousers. Match it to your shoes for a clean, formal line.
  • Smart casual: a cognac or tan tote with a knit, wide trousers and loafers. Brown leather softens grey and navy.
  • Dresses: a medium structured tote with a midi dress and a trench, carried on the shoulder.
  • Practical: a zip tote if you commute on public transport (see the best tote bags with zipper).

For weekends

The look: a softer or bigger tote, carried on the shoulder.

  • Jeans and a white shirt or tee: almost any tote works; a tan boat tote or a canvas-and-leather tote is the classic.
  • Knitwear and wide jeans: a chocolate or oxblood tote adds warmth.
  • Sporty: a black tote with trainers and a sweatshirt keeps it simple.
  • Markets and errands: a canvas or woven tote you won’t worry about.

For travel

The look: a zip tote that fits under a plane seat, carried on the shoulder, with a scarf or layer inside.

  • Wear neutral layers (navy, black, grey, cream) and choose a tote in a matching neutral.
  • Pick a tote with a phone pocket you can reach without opening the main zip.
  • If you’ll be on foot all day at your destination, add a crossbody strap or switch to a sling bag.

For evenings

The look: a small or mini tote, carried in the hand or the crook of the elbow.

  • A black or oxblood mini tote with a slip dress or a black trouser suit.
  • Suede reads softer and more evening-appropriate than smooth leather.
  • Leave the work tote at the office or in a locker; a big tote with an evening outfit looks like you’ve come from work, even when you have.

With a dress

A tote works with most dresses if the scale matches: small to medium totes with light or short dresses, larger structured totes with midi and maxi dresses and coats. Carrying in the elbow or hand looks most polished. For colour ideas with specific dress colours, see our guide to what colour purse goes with what.

With a coat

Over a coat, the handles need more drop: aim for 11 inches. A long coat and a tote carried in the hand is one of the smartest combinations. A camel coat with a cognac or chocolate tote is a classic; a black coat with a black or oxblood tote is sharper.

Seasonal styling

Season Tote Pairs with
Spring Tan, oat or stone; canvas and leather Trench coats, light knits, loafers
Summer Woven leather, canvas, light tan Linen, sandals, dresses
Autumn Cognac, chocolate, oxblood; suede Knitwear, boots, camel coats
Winter Black, chocolate, navy; buffalo or full grain Wool coats, scarves, boots

Woven leather totes like our Wren (from $179) are a summer staple; buffalo leather like the Grasmere ($215) shrugs off winter weather.

Colour: how to match a tote to your outfit

The three approaches

  1. Match your shoes or belt. The most classic. Black tote with black shoes; cognac tote with a cognac belt.
  2. Match your outfit’s neutral. Navy outfit, navy tote. Quiet and modern.
  3. Contrast on purpose. A tan or oxblood tote with an all-black or all-navy outfit becomes the point of interest.

Which colours go with most things

Tote colour Goes with Works hardest
Black Everything; strongest with black, grey, white, bright colours Work, evenings
Chocolate / dark brown Navy, cream, denim, olive, camel Autumn and winter
Cognac / tan Denim, white, navy, grey, black All year
Oxblood / burgundy Navy, grey, black, camel, denim Autumn, evenings
Olive Cream, tan, denim, navy Weekends
Oat / stone White, denim, pastels, linen Spring and summer
Navy Grey, white, camel, denim Work

If you’re buying one tote to go with everything, black or a mid-brown (cognac or chocolate) is hardest to get wrong. Brown leather also changes with time; tan and cognac in particular darken towards honey in the first year, which is part of their appeal. See what is leather patina?.

Styling by tote type

Tote type Dress it up Dress it down
Structured work tote Tailoring, carry in the hand Jeans and a blazer
Boat tote Midi dress and trench Jeans, tee, trainers
Woven tote Linen dress and sandals Shorts and a shirt
Canvas and leather Chinos and a knit Weekend anything
Zip tote Travel tailoring Athleisure for flights
Mini tote Evening dress Jeans and a cashmere knit
Hair-on hide Black outfit, let it be the statement Denim

What to put in a tote so it looks good

A tote’s styling isn’t just outside. An overstuffed tote bulges, sags at the handles and pulls the outfit out of shape.

  • Use one or two pouches for small things, so the tote’s shape stays clean.
  • Keep the laptop against the back wall (the side against your body).
  • Leave an inch of space at the top, so the handles stand up and the opening doesn’t gape.
  • Take out what you don’t need each evening.

Mistakes that make a tote look wrong

  • Too big for the occasion. A 17-inch work tote at dinner.
  • Too small for the load. Overstuffed with a laptop poking out.
  • Handles too short for your coat. The bag rides up into your armpit.
  • One handle on, one off. Looks hurried, and the bag tips.
  • Dirty base and scuffed corners. The first things people see. Wipe leather weekly; see how to clean a leather bag.
  • Matching everything. Matching tote, shoes, belt and coat looks dated. Match one, let the rest be neutral.
  • Carrying two big bags. Put the second inside the first, or swap the tote for a backpack.

How men can wear a tote

Totes aren’t just for women. For men, a structured leather or waxed-canvas tote in black, chocolate or olive works with tailoring and with casual clothes. Carry it in the hand or on the shoulder; avoid very slouchy shapes if you want it to read as a work bag. A boat tote with a navy jumper and chinos is a classic weekend look. If you’d rather not carry a tote, see our guides to messenger bags and leather briefcases.

Comfort: carrying a heavy tote without hurting

  • Swap shoulders every 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Keep it under about 10% of your body weight, and much less for daily commuting.
  • Wider handles spread the load; flat leather handles at least 1 inch wide are kinder than thin round cords.
  • Use a crossbody strap when the bag is full and you’ll be walking a long way.
  • Pack heavy things low and against your body.

Frequently asked questions

How do you wear a tote bag?

In the hand, in the crook of the elbow, on the shoulder, or crossbody on a long strap. Shoulder is the most comfortable for a full bag; hand and elbow look most polished.

What handle drop do I need to wear a tote on my shoulder?

About 9–10 inches over a shirt or jumper, and 11 inches or more over a winter coat.

Can you wear a tote bag with a dress?

Yes. Match the scale: a small or medium tote with a light or short dress, a larger structured tote with a midi or maxi dress and a coat. Carry it in the hand or elbow for the most polished look.

What size tote bag is best for a petite frame?

Around 12–15 inches wide, ideally taller than wide, with a drop that keeps the base between your waist and hip.

What colour tote goes with everything?

Black, followed by mid-browns such as cognac and chocolate. They work with denim, navy, grey, black, cream and camel.

Can a tote bag be formal?

A structured leather tote in black, chocolate or navy, carried in the hand, is formal enough for most offices and many events. Swap it for a small bag or clutch at formal evenings.

Can men wear tote bags?

Yes. Structured leather or waxed-canvas totes in dark neutrals work with tailoring and casual clothes.

How do I stop my tote bag slipping off my shoulder?

Choose a longer drop (10–11 inches), wider flat handles and handles set wider apart, or add a crossbody strap. Wearing it under a coat collar helps too.
